Annie's Sub-5: Successful
Tacoma City Marathon May 5, 2013 After the Eugene Marathon, I was looking to have a sub-5 time again. I was looking forward to doing it at the Newport Marathon in Oregon, but I did it in Tacoma. In the morning of this marathon, I was searching for Annie to pace her to her first Sub-5 time. When I found her - she looked really serious. No hugs, a simple “hey”, and more stretching...

The Ghosts of Marathons Past
Eugene Marathon April 22, 2013 If you asked me a week ago to name all of the race events I have done without looking on this blog site or my Marathon Maniac database - I wouldn’t have a complete answer to give you. If you have followed every blog on this site, you would think - “Will, there is always something crazy or memorable about all of your races.” But the truth is that...

Annie's sub-5
Lately, I have been a lazy piece of shit… I wish I had a better term, or phase to describe my late night Call of Duty gaming, but that’s what I have been since the LA Marathon. Aside of that, I have been depressed from the lack of support of my friends back home. But it’s time to move on from that, and get back to running. That last marathon really proved to me how selfish some...

A week before the LA Marathon, I was motivated to crush my Personal Best, and celebrate with my friends at the finish line. Neither of the two happened, but I became a stronger person afterwards. This marathon was the most important marathon of the year to me. For the sake of absence, this marathon should have been my first marathon a year ago. So essentially, I wanted to do my best. I put a lot...

It Takes One to Know One
I was over zealous early as a marathoner new born. All the right things came too soon in my life as a runner. I never had the time to relish in my post week as a new marathoner. In fact, I ran another marathon the very next weekend with a friend. My second marathon was the Tobacco Road Marathon in Beautiful Cary, North Carolina. It’s where I found out about the Marathon Maniacs Running...

Operation Jack Northwest 6 HR event was my first timed event. I decided to tag along with a friend from previous marathons and take it easy. That I did. I actually did more running did I actually wanted to. But the race director insisted I go the extra mile to make my total mileage 27.6. Cool… I decided to take the train home early to compete in a local Call of Duty Black Ops 2...

From Seattle with Love
November 25, 2012 - The Amica Seattle Marathon: It was a chilly morning and I am moving and shaking to try to stay warm before the marathon. This is the marathon that I said I would give more effort to then the last couple of junk marathons I have been running in. My goal time was simply a sub-5 run time and I failed by 5 minutes. Although I was a little upset of this; It never took away from...

Life Happens
November 3rd, 2012: Nashville Ultra Marathon series (50K) It’s 3:45am in the morning and I am in Fort Campbell, Kentucky with an old friend I served with in Iraq. Their Hospitality was greatly appreciated and getting me to my event was another blessing. Usually before, during, or after my race something really random or crazy happens. Nothing happened before I can report, the race went...

Day 4: Tucson Marathon PR prep
Guys… Hamstrings are important. They are the most undercover muscle group in our legs, and for me - I neglected them for so long. After my first marathon - I acknowledged how important it is to work the hamstrings. The two worse pains you can feel during a marathon on mile 18 is Your Hamstrings pulling, or soreness, and your lower back tightening on you.  Today’s Work out was:...

Day 2: Tuscon Marathon PR Prep
Today was my first time running a marathon in Nike Free Runs. After reading many reviews on the shoe; I was a little confident in wearing them. When I went on my recon run on Day 0, I found out that those reviews were true. I felt that other muscle groups were being used, and it was an easy run. However, I worried about the impact on my feet.  So, for this trial run - I decided to run the first...

Day 0: Tucson Marathon PR Prep
Day 0 is my recon of places to run to simulate the Tucson marathon course. Recon Route 1 starts flat for half of a mile and for 0.65 miles goes up a rolling hill. Another hill presents itself around mile 3.65, mile 4. Although the Tuscon marathon is mostly downhill - I can develop some good Strengthening in my legs.  I think the best place to run for a more mid range (8-10 miles) will be on a...

Make it Interesting
Sorry guys that I have been M.I.A, but with school and the planning of my running ambitions has been time consuming. I have PR-ed on my third 50K, and found a trail run that is “safe” to run. If you hate trail running - I would love to recommend the Defiance 50K in Tacoma, WA. You will fall in love with this course, and if this is your first ultra - then it will be even better.  Now,...

This Morning's Run
This week has been a hectic week with tough decisions, and humbling experiences. However, during this chaotic week, I feel as though I have everything figured out for the future. I won’t go into details, but I want to discuss how important an emotional and mental well being plays a key role into your training, and event running.  While in the process of trying to figure out everything - the...

Let us be Thankful
For the past two weeks I have been depressed. Just Overall depressed about everything, but the one thing my depression hit the hardest was running. The one thing that triggered this depression was the criticism I received during a FAT ASS race for going the wrong way. The course was poorly marked, and I came in last because of it. A race director and Marathon Maniac passive aggressively pretty...

The un-Logged Series Run Two: Tacoma to Gig Harbor...
6:15am, I still cannot sleep, due to the severe ambition of my upcoming runs. As I laid in bed thinking whether I should just get up and start un-Logged Run Two, or should I get some rest. Everything in my body felt great. My heart must have beaten to the beat of my shuffle pace at that very moment, and I knew it was the perfect time for me to start run two. I took a sip of water, stretched in...

The un-Logged Series
Maybe I am crazy, but I shouldn’t seek a medal, or a big post race celebration for finishing up a big run. In my opinion, some marathoners get so caught up in the action of the atmosphere of crowds of runners, water stations, and post race swagger. How do I know, I know plenty of people how are like that. Recently, I moved from the east coast to Tacoma, Washington, and I love it here. The...

The One-Percent
Okay, this has been on my mind lately - Runners… The same ones. Recently, I have been talking to Team RWB in the collaboration with Project 26.2, and during the Stars and Stripes marathon I see a young man with the Team RWB shirt. After I seen him pass by a few times; I would lower my head to show him my Combat Infantryman hat. After a while, he caught on that I have served in Iraq, and...

How to have successful Double Marathons
The two marathons I chose to do was the Cook Park Marathon and the Stars and Stripes Marthon, which were both conveniently hosted by the same race director, and the location from the two were not to far apart from each other. I realized that I did make a minor mistake before coming into this double marathon - I never checked the course lay out for the two, however the courses were flat with few...

How to run a marathon... DRUNK!
(I knew there would be a moment in my life that I would run a marathon hungover and drunk - I just didn’t know when) June 29th, 2012 - 7:10 @ Safeco Field for a Seattle Mariners game - Caldy (my roommate) and I was waiting on a friend of mines, Stacy, to meet us up at the leftside of the baseball stadium. Relapse
June 23, 2012 - It’s my birthday, and I haven’t run in a week. With work and my birthday mixed with laziness - I just haven’t found the effort to go on a short little run or anythng. I remember my crazy drunken days in europe, and last weekend was nothing short of that. The day after my birthday I felt the guilt kick in - My young marathoner soul was talking me, and said,...

Odd jobs to pay for Race Registration
About a few months ago, I was really desperate for money to do the Columbia marathon in Columbia, South Carolina. I was just coming back from a long vacation, but I was determined to run in this marathon, but I did not have the money to pay for race registration. Then,an opportunity was knocking at my door - a foreign national asked me four days before she had to turn in her assignment to do a...

The money could be used for the honeymoon… To a beautiful destination, and of course - YES! Another place to do a marathon… LOL I LOVE IT!

The Army Birthday 10 miler
0600 with my two good friends to run the Fort Bragg Army 10 miler. I must have seen a million people I knew there - From infantry brothers I served with, people I have seen at marathons, and familiar faces from the USO and MWR. The actual run was a fun run, and one I did not take too serious. Only Fort Bragg, Home of the Airborne and Special Operations would start their only long distance run with...

Last Night
Last night I could not go to sleep due to me thinking of another ultra-marathon. It’s been a while since my last ultra marathon, and trail run. I must have complained the whole time during my last trail run, but I feel as if I am mature to realize that if I want the experience of becoming a better well-rounded runner - then I need the trail run, and other ultra marathons. That itch of...

Ascend From Darkness
Oct 2010, I took a trip to the westcoast to visit my friends.  I went to Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland. I went to my bestfriend, Kassie, birthday party in downtown Portland, and the experience was less than a reality TV show. Being the only guy in the group really created a lot of estrogen issues, however my friends were there to correct my “slip-ups”. Around the...
